Visit to the Port of Dunkirk postponed until the start of the 2023 school year

Event postponed until 2023

With Olivier Theis (ESB61)

France's third-largest port, the Port of Dunkirk is renowned as a port for large bulk goods destined for its numerous industrial sites. It also excels in other segments, such as cross-Channel ro-ro shipping to Great Britain, containers, fruit...

This major seaport, the result of the transformation of the Port Autonome de Dunkerque, located 90 minutes by boat from the Pas de Calais, has an undeniable energy vocation, with an oil terminal and an LNG terminal (via a gas pipeline).

The historic port of Dunkirk is in fact a fishing port. It dates back to the 9th century. Over the centuries, it expanded and was modified until the 16th century. But it was with Louis XVI and his architect Vauban that the city saw its port develop. In the 20th century, the port became a trading hub for the whole of northern France. But it wasn't until 1972 that a lock was built to accommodate 100,000-ton ships. And in 1975, the West Port was finally equipped to handle 300,000-ton ships.
